What is transfection?

A short definition of transfection: It is the process of introducing nucleic acids into eukaryotic cells. Genetic material, such as plasmid DNA, siRNA, protein, can be transfected into cells. During cell transfection, transient pores, "micro-holes", are formed in the cell membrane for uptake of genetic material into cells. After transfection procedure, the genetic material will conduct biologic event and cause changes of transfected cells. Virus mediated transfection is usually termed as "transduction". Transfection to bacteria is usually termed as "transformation".
